PCNL for Large/Staghorn Kidney Stone

A Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is an operation to remove stones from the kidney. It is a form of keyhole surgery so is performed through a small cut in the skin.

PCNL is used for the treatment of stones in the kidney which are not suitable for other, less invasive treatments because they are too large, too hard or associated with abnormal kidneys.

Signs and Treatment of Urinary Infections Prior to Surgery

It is very important that your urine remain free of infection prior to PCNL. Therefore if you suspect that you may have a urinary tract infection (burning on urination, blood in the urine, urinary frequency and urgency, fevers), please notify the doctor immediately so that proper cultures and treatment may be provided.

Advantages

Allows for large or complicated stones to be treated in a minimally invasive fashion, which in the past would have necessitated a large incision, and longer hospital stay.

Hospital stay is now 2-4 days, and the out of hospital recovery time is significantly shorter than the traditional open surgical approaches. Quicker return to work.

How can you prevent the disorder from happening or recurring?

  • Drinking enough fluid
  • Meeting your daily calcium requirement
  • Avoiding excess Vitamin D
  • Limiting meat consumption and oxalate-rich foods (spinach, chocolates, potatoes, beets, etc)
